Postcards from the fridge

This week I am taking inspiration from the lovely Redpeffer, who recently posted a ‘postcard from the fridge’ to her late pet, Bonnie.

All the time since Mushroom was born, and especially in the past month or so in the lead up to Christmas, I find myself thinking ‘Mum would have loved this,’ or ‘if only Mum could see him now,’ when out and about with Mushroom. So I have decided to write my postcard from the fridge to my Mum. I will write these to others too, but I’m sure there will be plenty more to my Mum over the course of this year.

Happy New Year! | From Mushroom’s mouth

Hello again,

Mummy’s a bit miserable at the moment as she didn’t quite achieve everything she’d planned for this year – see her New Year’s post over at Honest Speaks: No promises, no resolutions. See? Blah blah blah. So I’m taking over here.

I didn’t plan to achieve ANYTHING this year so of course I have surpassed all expectations. Yay me! Mummy’s yearly email from Future Me listed all the things she thought she would achieve (she did achieve some of them actually, she’ll realise this later) as well as her hopes for me. So I’ll start with that.

Mummy hoped I would be potty trained by now…. Check. I am even dry at night now – no more nappies, woo hoo!

Mummy wondered if I would be speaking a bit more – enough to hold a ‘proper’ conversation…. Check. Actually there was nothing wrong with my conversation before, she just wasn’t listening hard enough but now that I have more actual words to play with she pays more attention and is starting to realise just how insightful and hilarious I am. Seriously. I’m sure she’ll share her thoughts on this soon enough.

Mummy wondered whether I’d be able to say ‘I love you’ by now…. Check. Actually, I can say ‘I love you’ and ‘sorry.’ Gets me out of a whole heap of trouble that does. Useful things, these words…

Mummy wondered whether I’d be able to ride my balance bike properly… Check. I leave her in the dust! I am now learning to pedal at nursery (we have nothing with pedals on at home. Nothing. *sigh*). I’m getting there and soon I’ll be demanding asking for a proper bike. At the moment I practice pedaling at home when they’re trying to put me to bed.

As for me, well I am very pleased with my progress. I’ve been to several parties this year, eaten a whole heap of cake and even been to the theatre a few times! I’ve also learned how to put on my own shoes, trousers and coat. Vests and t-shirts are a bit trickier but I’m getting there. I’ve also learned how to do ‘the look.’ You know the one parents do when they disapprove? That. I’ve got it down. Now when Mummy or Daddy give me the look I give it right back to make them laugh. That doesn’t always work though.  I suppose it depends on what I’ve been up to. Turns out stealing Daddy’s headphones is not a laughing matter. Neither is drawing on the walls… Still, you live and learn.

So, I’ve done pretty well don’t you think? The biggest revelation for me in 2013 is that saying you’re sorry and/or that you love someone is a good way to get out of trouble. If that fails, make them laugh! I’m gonna work on more ways to do that. Alright 2014, bring it on – I’m ready for ya!

I’m a blogger, get me out of here!

I have been tagged by the lovely Iona (Check out her blog, Redpeffer if you’d like to meet her!) to do a meme – just for a bit of fun. The idea is to answer some ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!’ questions. Like Iona, I haven’t watched this programme for a long time. A very long time. The last series I watched was when Peter met Katie. And we all know how that turned out. So, here goes:

1.What one thing about being a parent makes you scream “Get me out of here!”

Being woken at 5am with “I want to wake up Mummy! Now!” That was this morning.

2. What qualities would you bring to the jungle?

I’m open, patient (well fairly) and (I’m told) a good peacemaker. I think the last would probably be the most useful.

3. How are you likely to annoy people in your were stuck with them for 3 weeks?

Very. Aren’t we all annoying? If I’m tired and hungry (which I expect I would be) I’m likely to be oversensitive. I can also be a bit passive aggressive if I’m a bit scared of someone and don’t want to stand up to them. I know this is annoying and I always get annoyed with myself when I notice I’m doing it. I’m much better at standing up for other people! Also, I would probably tidy up after people too much (although I’m not sure how tidy a jungle can get).

4. What is the worst thing you have ever eaten?

The worst is associated with a memory I’d rather not recall but the second worst for me is any strong cheese. I only really like mozzarella and halloumi and even cheddar tastes strong to me. Finding  unexpected feta in a salad makes me gag.

5. What item would you smuggle into the jungle with you?

My phone is a bit obvious but I would smuggle it in not to make calls (they’d notice it and take it away, surely?) but to watch videos of Mushroom. I can’t imagine there would be much of a signal for calls anyway.

6. What is the most daring thing you have ever done?

I felt pretty daring the first time I stood on a stage and shared my poetry in front of an audience. There are other daring things from my youth but I’d rather not share those here! No regrets though, only lessons learned.

7. Who would you miss most if you went into the jungle with a bunch of strangers?

Mushroom. I’d miss Mr B too but I’ve not been away from Mushroom for more than one night so I’d miss him first.

8. What celebrity alive or dead would you like to have with you in the jungle and why?

Nelson Mandela. If I had to pick just one. Otherwise I’ve a list as long as my arm.

9. What would scare you about being in the jungle?

The snakes. I am scared of snakes but have a real phobia not of the snakes themselves, but watching them eat (is there a word for that? I couldn’t find one). I really can’t watch it. In fact, I am shaking a little just thinking about it right now.

10. After leaving the jungle, you go to a luxury hotel. What would be the first thing you did on reaching your hotel?

Shower.

11. Who do you think should win the Jungle Crown this year?

No idea. Didn’t even know who was in it! Ant and Dec? 😉 Pretty sure it’s a done deal now though, right?

12. Who is your least favourite celebrity in the jungle and why?

Can’t remember who it was from when I last watched it but anyone being two-faced would have got my vote.

13. Which celebrity has surprised you most and how?

Tried to think of an answer for this outside of I’m a celeb but I’m not surprised by much (when it comes to celebs) I don’t think… I’ll get back to you on that if I think of anyone later!

Now, I’d like to tag @mummygadgetgeek @BELLA_and_WILL @theboyandme @mummywithissues new blogger @kanchanchar and I would love to see what creative interpretation @storyofmum might come up with from this! Of course, only if you want to/can be bothered/have nothing better to do, which I know is unlikely at this time of year! At least you know I’m thinking of you. x

Santa’s a bit scary | From Mushroom’s mouth

Hello you lucky people. This is Mushroom. Someone told Mummy that when I write it’s way more engaging than when she does. Well of course it is. So She’s giving me a whole section of her blog to share my thoughts with you. See, you lucky, lucky people.

Christmas treeSo, seeing as it’s coming up to Christmas I thought I’d share my thoughts on the festive season with you. The short version is – I love it. I get more chocolate than usual and there are pretty shiny things and twinkly lights everywhere. Lovely. I really enjoyed putting up the Christmas tree (with a Twinkle Twinkle star on the top!) and I love turning on the lights every day as soon as it gets dark. Apparently on ‘Christmas day’ it will have lots of presents under it for me. I like the idea of getting lots of presents. It’s a bit confusing though, ’cause I’ve been getting some when I see my friends and Daddy keeps saying I have to wait until Christmas day to open them! Firstly, I thought it was Christmas now? And secondly, wait? Why wait? I’m not too good at that. I even say sorry ten seconds into a time out in the hope of getting out of doing a full minute (Mummy figured out quickly that a minute’s enough for me). Speaking of Mummy….

She’s a bit of a pushover when it comes to presents. I’ve opened three so far under her watch. Ha! One of them was when we went to a local park to see Santa. He’d just left, apparently, but his elves took pity on me and gave me a gift anyway. I like the elves. It was two enormous pencils. I broke them both by the evening. Mummy said not to worry as it was an ‘accident.’ I’m gonna start using that.

The most recent gift came when I actually met Santa. Like I said, he was a bit scary. First of all, I’ve been told he’s ‘Father Christmas,’ so I didn’t get who this ‘Santa’ guy was until Mummy explained it’s a bit like she’s Mummy but her friends call her Rachael. But I’m not Santa’s mate. Are you? Not even sure the elves are, I mean, they work for him don’t they? How matey can you be with your boss, really? Anyway. We went to Westfield (Stratford) to see him at his house. Before we saw him, we got to play in a big room with lots of pretend sweeties.  I stacked sweetie towers and told anyone who came near me that they were ‘mine!’ Mummy said it was rude. Whatever. I’d worked hard to stack those towers and wasn’t letting anyone knock them down! She tried to distract me by showing me a sleigh. I made all the right noises and then she wanted me to get on it. I don’t think so! What if it flew off to the North Pole? I made a big fuss, screaming ‘I not flying!’ and eventually she gave up.

Would you feel safe if this took off? No? Didn't think so.

Would you feel safe if this took off? No? Didn’t think so.

Then, we went through carpet covered doors, past some more sweeties (normal sized one this time) we weren’t allowed to eat (and the point of that is…? Anyone?), into a room with an enormous TV. We had to wear glasses, which I didn’t like so much but didn’t complain. Then we watched a film that started off being really scary! I shouted to Mummy that I wanted to go back and play but she ignored me. Then pictures of the children I’d seen in the other room appeared in the film, and eventually one of me! I liked that. The rest of the film was ok but there wasn’t enough of me in it if you ask me (no-one did).

Afterwards, we went to another room where I finally came face to face with the big man. He was enormous, and a bit scary. When it was my turn to talk to him I sat really close to Mummy. He asked me my age and some other stuff. I kept my mouth shut. Too many questions, old man! Eventually, he asked what I wanted for Christmas. I was giving it some thought but Mummy seemed a bit on edge, eyeing up the other parents. Did she not realise how important this was? She made a few suggestions and eventually she came up with the goods. She looked relieved when I told Father Christmas what I wanted. Can’t think why, it’s nothing to do with her! Anyway, I was ready to go after that and he gave me a present before I left. Result! I had to wait til Daddy got home to open it and I thought showed great restraint. Daddy wanted me to wait even longer but Mummy told him she’d already promised me (see? Pushover) so I was allowed. Besides, he got a gift too – a photo of me and Father Christmas! What more could he want?

So, parent bloggers…. How do you feel about Christmas? Do you prefer giving or receiving presents? And what about the kids? Do they like Father Christmas (Santa, if you’re matey with him – if you are, put in a good word for me would you)? Or do they find him a bit scary too?

Before I forget, if you do prefer giving you can add me to your list. I’ve been a good boy, honest.

A sweet sensory recipe for Christmas

Another easy recipe (I don’t do complicated recipes so they’ll all be easy!) that also serves as sensory play for your little ones. It’s got touch, smell and taste – what’s not to love! You could even use this time to talk about colours and shapes, if you like (you don’t have to). The main purpose is to have fun!

You will need: Icing sugar, peppermint essence, strawberry flavouring, red food colouring and sparkles (optional! Mushroom insisted no these)

2013-08-31 09.28.23

Oh, and an egg white. I forgot to take a photo of that. Find out how to separate eggs here.

And here’s how to make your sweets in pictures! Hover over the images for more info (and to find out what to do for the bits I didn’t get pictures of because of sticky hands!)

These sweets may be a bit sickly for adult tastes (unless you have a really sweet tooth!) and even Mushroom wouldn’t eat more than a couple but they are such good fun to make (it’s edible play dough as far as he’s concerned!). You could wrap them up in little muslin bags and add some little stars and give them to family as Christmas presents! It doesn’t matter if they don’t eat them – it’s the thought that they were made my your little chef that counts.

If you try these I’ve no doubt that you’ll make more spectacular looking ones than we did so please share your pictures either on twitter (remember tweet me so I can see!) or if you write a blog, do comment below. Happy (non) baking!

Nature in the city 6: Autumn leaves

This week we thought we’d make the most of the autumn leaves before the snow descends (it’s coming soon, apparently!) and makes them all slimy. ‘Cause it’s all about the crunch, right?

Sadly, although we did go out and kick some leaves, a lot of them were already pretty slimy from the rain…

2013-11-22 15.51.27

So I’m cheating a little this week and using photos from when the leaves were crunchy a couple of weeks back! It’s still nature in the city right? And autumn is almost over so wanted to share this before it’s too late.

So, it was a cold but sunny afternoon and we were headed to the park but Mushroom couldn’t wait that long. He saw a nice tidy pile by a tree on the corner of our street. ‘Can I Mummy…?’ I said no at first (someone had obviously gone the the trouble of sweeping them up) but he insisted ‘Kick leaves! This, leaves!’ He didn’t understand why we should wait til we got the the park. So I told him to go ahead and kick!

The look on his face was worth the guilt of messing up someone’s nice tidy pile… I hope they weren’t too upset the next day!

Motherhood: The messy bits

Motherhood is messy.

I’m not talking about messy play messy – paint smeared on everything, crayon drawings on the floor and walls, glue, flour, lentils etc. everywhere, sand in every crevice… or even the mess of eating – the weaning stage, the throwing food around stage… or other messes such as those relating to illness and/or toilet training (or both at once. Ew. But it happens).

While all of these messes deserve a mention and some of them even a blog post of their own, what I’m talking about today is the mess on the inside. Our mess. The stuff we never thought would come up before we had our kids.

The past few weeks Mushroom has been a monster. A MONSTER. Especially at bedtime. Several times I have wanted to scream at him ‘WHY CAN’T YOU JUST GO TO SLEEP!’ I’m ashamed to say that once (not this week), I did. Needless to say, it didn’t exactly help matters. That was a long night with a lot of apologising. Before I had him, I told myself, ‘I’ll never shout at my kid/s, it doesn’t do any good anyway.’ I was good with kids, they never played me up (other people’s kids still don’t!) so although I knew it wouldn’t be easy, I never really understood just how much patience I would need to keep my word. Here are some other things that I might not have believed I would think before I had Mushroom.

Get off me!

I am quite a tactile person. I like to hug, and be hugged. When with close friends, I frequently touch them while we speak and when Mushroom first arrived, I loved holding him close, feeling his skin on mine and breathing in his scent. I looked forward to the day he would be able to hug me back. I never thought I could tire of his touch.

Oh believe me, I can. When I have been asked ‘carry me please’ half the day and used as a human climbing frame for the rest of it. When he says ‘I want hug! for the 10th time after he’s ‘gone to bed,’ when he pulls up my t-shirt so he can rest his head on my belly (with his hand still on my face), and has been doing this for weeks, I sometimes want to shout ‘Get off me!’ and run for cover.

Leave me alone!

Ok, so it did occur to me that I would miss having a little time to myself. But I didn’t realise just how much it would get to me during the clingy/separation anxiety phase. I work part-time so as to spend time with Mushroom and enjoy doing things with him – we especially like painting, baking and running around outside – but never getting to go to the loo on my own is more tiresome than I ever imagined. The other day Mushroom followed me in and, as I walked in, he ‘helpfully’ handed me his snotty tissue and asked whether I had finished yet. I had only gone in there to wash my hands.

Just. Go. To Sleep!

As I mentioned earlier, Mushrooom is currently fighting bedtime (naptime is less of a problem). He’s never been a great sleeper but it’s getting ridiculous. I’ve tried the ‘back to bed’ routine. I did it for about a week and it just exhausted me. So I’ve just gone back to staying with him while he goes to sleep. Some nights I can sit by the door but most nights he wants to fall asleep attached to me in some way so I sit contorted by the bed as he drifts off to sleep. At least, I always think he’s drifting off and that’s when he starts. ‘I thirsty.’ or ‘My hungry Mummy.’ or even ‘I want Daddy!’ (I got Daddy once, thinking it would give me a break. He wanted to play with him. When he realised that wasn’t happening he was not happy). His current favourite is ‘ need a poo!’ While I can say ‘no.’ to all his other requests, he knows I can’t refuse this one. I know he’s playing me when I hear him singing on the loo and playing with his bath toys (he likes privacy when he goes, shame he doesn’t afford me the same courtesy). ‘Back to bed!’ I tell him, as firmly and calmly as I can manage (through my teeth, if it’s been a long evening). Then, eventually, he will actually fall asleep.

And here’s something I expected to say, but perhaps not quite so often:

I’m sorry…

I often whisper to him I untangle myself and look at him, lying sprawled across his little bed, which still has the cot side up at the back. I gaze at his chubby little cheeks, red with the effort of trying to convince me he’s not tired, and remember he’s still just a baby, really, with a whole lot of growing to do. ‘I’m sorry. I love you.’ I say this to him a lot when he’s awake too but it’s when he’s sleeping that I apologise for those unsaid thoughts, the ones that I wish I didn’t think. The ones that make me wonder whether I’m cut out for this motherhood thing. The messy ones.

Motherhood is hard. It’s also incredibly rewarding, yes, but it is hard. It feels even harder when it looks like you’re the only one having these messy thoughts while everyone else is enjoying every second they spend with their children.

Do you have messy bits? What thoughts do you have about your children that you wouldn’t usually share? Please comment below, let’s get it all out there and remind ourselves that even though we love our kids, sometimes it’s ok to have bad thoughts about them. They’re only thoughts… and we’re only human.

(pretty please? I can’t be the only one…. Can I?)

Nature in the city 5: Pigeons and puddles

It’s been a couple of weeks since my last nature in the city post so these photos are from the past two – three weeks…. The pigeons we chased last Saturday, while waiting for a friend to pick us up from Sainsbury’s in Ilford! So right in the middle of the high street, opposite a massive shopping mall, we managed to find a little nature.

Mushroom asked why they were eating the ‘dirty bread’ and wanted to touch one. They weren’t so keen!

Chasing pigeons

Neither was he, really. When he got up a bit closer he squealed and ran back to me laughing. He couldn’t understand why some flew away and some didn’t. We had a bit of a conversation about city bird and country birds and why, although it’s a kind and generous offer, we shouldn’t give the pigeons any of his sweets…

The puddle pictures are from the week before after particularly heavy rainfall. We headed back to Coronation Gardens with our boots on for a bit of puddle jumping.

The puddles by the bandstand were so big that Mushroom asked if he could go swimming in one! I think we was making a joke (I hope so). A leaf dropped and he asked about the ‘circles’ it made in the water…

A leaf fell in

Then he was ready…. Splash!!

Splash!

If enjoyed these photos you might also like something I wrote on my other blog (it’s more prose than poetry but see what you think), last month :  Pigeons and puddles.
